Tourism Taxes: Thumbs Down

Being that I live in the State of Florida, I understand that tourism is a major part of the economy down here.  We have beautiful beaches, fabulous night life, and many delicious restaurants.  I've heard talk about creating taxes on tourism to help generate money for our suffering economy.  I have no issue with a few small taxes on things.

So, today I am researching information for a trip to Dallas, TX.  I found flight information okay, but when I got to the car rental bit my jaw dropped.  Renting a car for 4 days will incur over $90 in taxes & fees!!!  Really?  Is that necessary?  No, it isn't.  I understand taxing and needs of people, but seriously?  The taxes are more than the cost of the rental itself.

I was in Houston in March of 2010 and I was able to rent a car for 1 day for less than $18, taxes included.  So it isn't the state, it must be Dallas.

This scares me because there are so many times that people rent cars and the quotes are always before tax.  Now I am going to be very cautious when booking trips for people and a car rental is involved.  I don't want to come across as the agent that doesn't know her stuff!

Rant Over!  Lesson Learned!
